Meet Nina Zero (née Mary Baker), the passionate and spontaneous photographer from Los Angeles. Having grown up in an abusive home and having survived plenty of problems (including some time behind bars), thirty-year old Nina has become a tough and resourceful woman who can handle any challenge.
Now, even though her financial problems over the past couple of months threaten to overwhelm her, there is hope on the horizon: With a new exhibition of her work showing at a prestigious southern California gallery, Nina—“Queen of the Tabloids”—is on the verge of becoming “the first serious photographer to cross over” from ignominious commercial dreck to the very profitable world of artistic photography “since Weegee.”
So what could possibly interfere with Nina’s promising future? Christine Myers, one of Nina’s photographic models, is found to have been raped, strangled, and dumped like trash in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Nina finds herself drawn into the investigation of a case that may involve a serial rapist and other victims when she receives major clues: some clues appear in the form a video CD which seems to depict a disturbing scene of S&M pornography featuring a woman with a unique tattoo, and another clue—strangely enough—appears in the form of a JOKE. Unable to turn her back on her murdered model and cooperating (more than merely professionally) with an attractive homicide copy from the LA County sheriff’s department, Nina focuses all her energies on an extremely dangerous quest “to see the true face of whoever killed her. That’s something I have to hunt down!”
ZERO TO THE BONE, Robert Eversz’s fifth Nina Zero novel, is polished and powerful, enriched by meticulous plotting and sparkling characterizations. You will fall in love with this sexy amateur sleuth whose relentless pursuit of a ruthless killer will keep you turning pages as fast as you can read. A torrid tale of murder and mayhem filled with humor, sex, and plenty of pulse-pounding action, the edgy ZERO TO THE BONE is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED mystery that confirms Eversz’s reputation as writer of explosive thrillers.
