When the twisting-and-turning plot begins, Barrington finds himself confronted by three problems:

(1) Herbie Fisher, a dim-witted schlimil who has just won a multi-million dollar lottery, offers Barrington a million dollars for his advice and protection, which seems like a good investment especially since someone seems determined to relieve Fisher of his money and his life.

(2) Barrington’s spiteful, bloodthirsty ex-wife has escaped the watchful protection of her Mafia-boss father, and she is now determined to track down Barrington and finish what she had previously started.

(3) A seductive secret agent from Britain, eager to spend plenty of time between the sheets with Barrington, needs the Manhattan lawyer-sleuth for something more than just carnal fun-and-games – she will pay Barrington one hundred thousands pounds if he can find and neutralize a rogue agent with whom the British government is very unhappy.

This slowly developing tale of personal revenge, political corruption, and cold-blooded murder moves along much like a sleek corporation jet as it taxis into take-off position, rolls out onto the runway for a smooth take-off, easily gains speed and altitude, and – half-way through the flight – reaches maximum velocity but must contend with plenty of turbulence and danger.
