Author and Pastor Max Lucado has 100 million products in print since his first book was published 25 years ago. Lucado’s writings have been published in a wide variety of formats including trade books, gift books, children’s books, study Bibles, devotionals, commentaries, animated children’s videos, calendars, greeting cards, teaching curriculum and licensed gift products.

Of the 100 million products in print, 80 million are books. Lucado’s first book, On the Anvil, was released in 1985. His latest book, Outlive Your Life: You Were Made to Make a Difference, releases tomorrow from Thomas Nelson. Currently his books have been translated into more than 40 languages.

Lucado’s books have appeared on every major best-seller list including Publishers Weekly, USA Today, The New York Times, the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and the Christian Booksellers Association. Lucado has been featured on many national media programs through the years, including “Fox & Friends,” “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America” in the last year alone.

Thomas Nelson has been Lucado’s long-term publisher and executives salute this significant achievement. Says David Moberg, senior vice president and group publisher for Non-Fiction at Thomas Nelson: “It is both stunning and humbling to consider 100 million products in print for Max. His writing has shaped millions—almost a generation–in their beliefs on grace, forgiveness and God’s love.”

Adds Lucado: “God has blessed me with such a great team. Editors, management, creative thinkers…they are the best. I’m especially thankful for the management skills of Steve Green who has overseen my publishing for over two decades. He has built a team that exceeds expectations.”

Max Lucado and his wife Denalyn live in San Antonio, Texas, where he is the Minister of Preaching at Oak Hills Church. More on Max Lucado, can be found at http://www.maxlucado.com/.

If those who are excluded are offended, perhaps lists and awards ought to be abolished. Thus, no one’s feelings are hurt, and that seems to be the goal of those who feel excluded. Enemies are forced into shaky alliances. And when the woman Fang loves is accused of betraying her people, her only hope is that Fang believes in her.
Customer Reviews

Disappointed but haven’t given up…
I usually put my reviews on the UK Amazon site. However, after reading the US Amazon reviews of ‘Bad Moon Rising’ I thought I’d copy my review here.

My favourites in the Dark Hunter series are the Wren and Vane stories, so I’ve been waiting with enthusiasm for Fang’s story (he and Aimee are the inter-species Romeo and Juliet of the Dark Hunter world!). The day before ‘Bad Moon Rising’ arrived, I reread Fury’s short story to bring me up to date with the wolves. Ho hum, there wasn’t much point. I’ll explain…

I can understand that we need to see Fang and Aimee’s side of previous stories. However, as the book progressed I began to read faster and faster. When was I going to get to something new? In retrospect I should have read slower (so that’s my warning to you!) because we only read about the ‘present day’ (in terms of the Dark Hunter storyline) in the very last section of the book. Everything else is just a rehash apart from one interesting section. It’s not giving anything away to say that this section concerns another realm (don’t worry, it’s far more interesting than more Greek god stuff!)and we’re introduced to an intriguing new character: Thorn (an Archeron replacement in terms of interest?). I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of Thorn (hope so).

After finishing the book I’m left with the feeling, ‘so what’? If you’re a Dark Hunter fan then of course you have to read this book and it’s perfectly readable (apart from the rushed writing which gives the characters things like an ‘evil smile’, followed on the next page by an ‘evil laugh’ – I’m getting used to this in Kenyon’s later books and it’s one reason I’ve stopped automatically buying all her books). However, the book could have been so much better. This is the first time we’ve had a bear as a main character, but to be honest you wouldn’t know it apart from a liking for honey and the way the cubs’s room is decorated (plus a little bear left on Aimee’s pillow – cute). I don’t even know what Aimee looks like as a bear (OK, she’s foremost a human, but the bear must still be part of her character). And that’s what is wrong for me with this story – it lacks depth. So much more could have been made of the struggle in their relationship and discovering the differences between the species (in Kelly Armstrong’s books her wolves are truly wolves).

Perhaps 70% of the book is a rehash of past (and better) stories and the characterisation is a bit muddled (I think there are far too many ‘clever’ remarks and ALL the characters make them, not just the characters where it’s part of their characterisation, so what is meant to be clever or funny just falls flat and distracts).

Therefore I suggest reading and enjoying, but don’t expect too much so you’re not disappointed. Plus don’t rush the reading to get to something ‘new’ – there’s not much of that so just enjoy what’s there (I rushed too much and I’m therefore confused by Varyk and puzzled and irritated with Maman Bear’s character – I should reread but I’m not convinced I can be bothered, which is very unlike me). By the way, before you give me a ‘not helpful’ for not raving about Sherrilyn Kenyon’s book, please note I’m a fan, albeit a disappointed fan who lately has become more disappointed with the publication of each new book, but I haven’t given up.

They just keep getting shorter…
I am (was) a avid SK fan. I was ready to wait at walmart at 12am to get Acheron. This book was really not what I expected. I am very tired of the buildup of a huge great book and then going into the bookstore to see it is almost a novella. More than half of the book was rehashing the past in a different viewpoint. One chapter was a chapter from Wren’s book…probably just copied and pasted that. There is just SOOO much missing, so much character exploration that could have been brought in. All the regular dark-hunters were missing except for Valerius in the past. The new books seem less vivid to me. A really good author can let you picture the books environment in your imagination. I just got one big blur from this book. Even in the new part of the book it is almost impossible to tell where on the timeline it is taking place. This is just my opinion that it almost seems like Acheron like lost his powers at the end of the book (he didn’t but it seems like he has been brought down on the character totem pole). I think she really needs to take more time with these books. I don’t care about the manga or the marketing of the new website. I want a decent storyline and it seems like that is going by the wayside. I think I will switch my fan adoration to Christine Feehan…even after umpteen books they still have good character interaction and are more than 300 pages.

Ok.
I have read everyone of the Dark Hunter stories. I have to say besides Ash, Fang and Aimee’s story was the one that I was looking forward to the most. That being said it was a little bit of a disappointment. Not to say that I didn’t love it, but I started out thinking ok, she’s telling us how they met and then it was when he was hurt, what really happened during that time. But as the book went on I was reading parts of books that I’ve already read. The last part of the book was the best because it was current. In “Upon a Midnight Clear” there is a scene where Fang, Fury, Vane and Bride are all at their house and one of them looks at Fang and says “You smell like Bear” According to this book, he never lived with them until after everyone knew about him and Aimee…
Overall, if you’re looking for a great re-read of all the other books into one, this is the book for you. While I still loved it because it’s Fang and Aimee’s story, it did fall short for me.

The triumphant return of one of comics’ greatest talents, with an engrossing story of one man’s search for love, meaning, sanity, and perfect architectural proportions. An epic story long awaited, and well worth the wait.

Meet Asterios Polyp: middle-aged, meagerly successful architect and teacher, aesthete and womanizer, whose life is wholly upended when his New York City apartment goes up in flames. In a tenacious daze, he leaves the city and relocates to a small town in the American heartland. But what is this “escape” really about?

As the story unfolds, moving between the present and the past, we begin to understand this confounding yet fascinating character, and how he’s gotten to where he is. And isn’t. And we meet Hana: a sweet, smart, first-generation Japanese American artist with whom he had made a blissful life. But now she’s gone. Did Asterios do something to drive her away? What has happened to her? Is she even alive? All the questions will be answered, eventually.

In the meantime, we are enthralled by Mazzucchelli’s extraordinarily imagined world of brilliantly conceived eccentrics, sharply observed social mores, and deftly depicted asides on everything from design theory to the nature of human perception.

Asterios Polyp is David Mazzucchelli’s masterpiece: a great American graphic novel.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. For decades, Mazzucchelli has been a master without a masterpiece. Now he has one. His long-awaited graphic novel is a huge, knotty marvel, the comics equivalent of a Pynchon or Gaddis novel, and radically different from anything he’s done before. Asterios Polyp, its arrogant, prickly protagonist, is an award-winning architect who’s never built an actual building, and a pedant in the midst of a spiritual crisis. After the structure of his own life falls apart, he runs away to try to rebuild it into something new. There are fascinating digressions on aesthetic philosophy, as well as some very broad satire, but the core of the book is Mazzucchelli’s odyssey of style—every major character in the book is associated with a specific drawing style and visual motifs, and the design, color scheme and formal techniques of every page change to reinforce whatever’s happening in the story. Although Mazzucchelli stacks the deck—few characters besides Polyp and his inamorata, the impossibly good-hearted sculptor Hana, are more than caricatures—the book’s bravado and mastery make it riveting even when it’s frustrating, and provide a powerful example of how comics use visual information to illustrate complex, interconnected topics. Easily one of the best books of 2009 already. (June)
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Review
“It’s as if John Updike had discovered a bag of art supplies and LSD. Elegant, deceptively simple line work and nearly subliminal color symbolism make everything go down like candy. The narrative comes back to earth for a profoundly satisfying climax, but you’ll want to keep turning pages–all the way back to the beginning, for another read.”
- Entertainment Weekly

“We can all stop reading comics now, because David Mazzucchelli’s crafted the ultimate comic book statement. Just take everything on your reading pile right now and chuck it out. Asterios Polyp is the new standard bearer. Mazzucchelli has somehow managed to jam just about everything great about comics into 340 pages of humanity, soul-searching, graphic design, philosophy and humor.” -Newsarama

“One of the smartest and most rewarding graphic novels of the year to date.” - Pop Matters

“It’s a remarkable, bravura achievement – funny, harrowing and thought-provoking.” - San Francisco Chronicle

“One of the greatest comics of all time.” – Comic Book Resources

“Mazzucchelli’s masterwork is by no means an easy read…but it is a transcendent one.” – Austin Chronicle

“A sprawling work about the life and loves of a middle-aged, philandering architect who loses everything in a fire. The coming release has been compared to the idiosyncratic work of Thomas Pynchon.” – Wall Street Journal

“A dazzling expertly constructed entertainment…that is a satirical comedy of remarriage, a treatise on aesthetics and design and ontology, late life Künstlerroman, a Novel of Ideas with two capital letters…”
- New York Times Book Review

“Finally, after a decade of silence, Mazzucchelli has returned with his own graphic novel, Asterios Polyp: sprawling, trippy, moving, and a hell of a lot of fun.Almost without realizing it, we slowly begin rooting for Asterios, and hard. A serial overthinker, he lives much of his life in his own head. So Mazzucchelli takes us there, repeatedly, with perfect clarity – it’s as if John Updike had discovered a bag of art supplies and LSD. Elegant, deceptively simple line work and nearly subliminal color symbolism make everything go down like candy. The narrative comes back to earth for a profoundly satisfying climax, but you’ll want to keep turning pages – all the way back to the beginning, for another read.” ~Entertainment Weekly

“Even by the standards of the graphic novel, this cosmic epic pushes the creative envelope. With previous credits including superheroes for Marvel Comics and the transformation of Paul Auster’s City of Glass into a graphic novel (2004), Mazzucchelli returns with a title that suggests a mid-period Pink Floyd song and an illustrated narrative that is every bit as mind-blowing. In this graphic novel of fate, chance and shooting stars, Polyp insists that “I am the hero of my own story,” yet the art provides plenty of evidence to the contrary. A visual and even philosophical stunner.”~ Kirkus

“The simplicity of that facile summary, along with the deceptively cartoony drawing style Mazzucchelli has adopted for the work, makes it easy to miss its genuine accomplishment. The sparseness of his illustration gives necessary clarity to his complex storytelling, which employs intricate and imaginative panel arrangements and a constantly shifting chronology.meticulously constructed. It’s a testimony to Mazzucchelli’s skills that by the end of Polyp’s odyssey, the arrogant academic has been rendered a tragic and sympathetic figure deserving of the tale’s (possibly) happy ending.” – Gordon Flagg, Booklist

“For decades, Mazzucchelli has been a master without a masterpiece. There are fascinating digressions on aesthetic philosophy, as well as some very broad satire, but the core of the book is Mazzucchelli’s odyssey of style-every major character in the book is associated with a specific drawing style and visual motifs, and the design, color scheme and formal techniques of every page change to reinforce whatever’s happening in the story. Although Mazzucchelli stacks the deck-few characters besides Polyp and his inamorata, the impossibly good-hearted sculptor Hana, are more than caricatures-the book’s bravado and mastery make it riveting even when it’s frustrating, and provide a powerful example of how comics use visual information to illustrate complex, interconnected topics. Easily one of the best books of 2009 already.” – Publishers Weekly

About the Author
David Mazzucchelli has been making comics his whole life. Known chiefly for his collaborations – with Frank Miller on seminal Batman and Daredevil stories, and with Paul Karasik on an adaptation of Paul Auster’s novel, City of Glass – he began publishing his own stories in 1991 in his anthology magazine, Rubber Blanket. Since then his short comics have been published in books and magazines around the world. Asterios Polyp is his first graphic novel.

=We knew he was good…but wow!=
If you’ve followed the work of David Mazzucchelli then you already know the man possesses far greater gifts than just being an artist. His work on Daredevil defined his hand and his self-published Rubber Blanket defined his passion.

In Asterios Polyp he defines his genuis.

When I’d heard he was going to “redefine the graphic novel” I immediately thought it was press release pretension. But you know, everyone deserves credit for trying. What Mazzucchelli does is makes it look like he’s not trying. It flows seamlessly from color to line, to form and shape and before you know it you’re really reading words and pictures in a very unique way; yet still familiar.

Anyone who loved Rubber Blanket and Paul Auster’s City of Glass will want this book. Anyone who likes smart literature who wants a new challenge for themselves to mix words and pictures will learn to appreciate what comics can be.

This is just another step in the right direction for the medium as well as the man. I hope David Mazzucchelli continues to practice in the medium he makes us appreciate so much.

=s=

Words fail
I waited for this book in the same fashion that I waited for Thomas Pynchon’s Against the Day, and Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore, and as with both of those books, not only was I *not* disappointed, I was amazed that these men not only raised the bar, but cleared it, with room to spare.

In the case of Asterios Polyp, I am glad to say that the wait is over, and Mazzucchelli has delivered not just the masterpiece we all knew he had in him, but probably the graphic novel we will still be talking about ten years from now, in the same way we talk about Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. Groundbreaking, emotional, inventive, sly, thought-provoking: Mazzucchelli has opened a door and shown us a room we never knew was in this house before. Bravo. I will have to buy a second copy soon as I have already loaned out the one I bought to my best friend.

Impressive
I’m a relatively new follower of the graphic novel literary genre, so perhaps a somewhat inexpert reviewer. I haven’t followed David Mazzucchelli’s work over the years or anything, but someone recommended this to me and I picked it up. And “Wow” is the right word for it. This GN takes you through the entire range of emotional responses that a really great text novel does. It’s extremely engaging, and there’s something, some little detail at least, that delights on just about every page. I also had the sense reading it that I need to read it again more closely, the way one should read such serious literature. Because there are deep literary resonances here. I heartily recommend it.

Steve Harvey, the host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, can’t count the number of impressive women he’s met over the years, whether it’s through the “Strawberry Letters” segment of his program or while on tour for his comedy shows. These are women who can run a small business, keep a household with three kids in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. Yet when it comes to relationships, they can’t figure out what makes men tick. Why? According to Steve it’s because they’re asking other women for advice when no one but another man can tell them how to find and keep a man. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds lights on concepts and questions such as:

—The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man?

—How to spot a mama’s boy and what if anything you can do about it.

—When to introduce the kids. And what to read into the first interaction between your date and your kids.

—The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is.

— And more…

Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
As a popular comedian, radio host and red-blooded male, Harvey doesn’t have the bona fides typical to most women’s relationship self-help, but he still manages a thorough, witty guide to the modern man. Harvey undertakes the tast because “Women are clueless about men,” because “Men get away with a whole lot of stuff” and because he has “some valuable information to change all of that.” Harvey makes a game effort, taking a bold but familiar men-are-dogs approach: if you’re “cutting back” on sex, “he will have another woman lined up and waiting to give him what he needs and wants–the cookie.” Several chapters later, however, he introduces the “ninety-day rule,” asserting that, actually, he won’t always have another woman lined up–and the only way to makes sure is a three-month vetting period. Harvey also tackles mama’s boys, “independent–and lonely–women,” and the matter of children in the dating world (“If he’s meeting the kids after you decide he’s the one, it’s too late”). Feminists and the easily offended probably won’t take to Harvey’s blanket statements and blunt advice, but Harvey’s fans and those in need of tough (but ticklish) love advice should check it out (especially the hysterical last-chapter Q&A).
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
Review
“Women should listen to Steve Harvey when it comes to what a good man is about. Steve Harvey dispenses a lot of fabulous information about men.
About the Author

Steve Harvey began doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s. His success as a stand-up comedian led to a WB network show, The Steve Harvey Show, which ran from 1996 to 2002. It was a huge hit and won multiple NAACP Image Awards. In 1997, Harvey continued his work in stand-up comedy, touring as one of the “Kings of Comedy,” along with Cedric the Entertainer, D. L. Hughley, and Bernie Mac. The comedy team would later be reunited in a film by Spike Lee called The Original Kings of Comedy. Steve Harvey is now widely known as the host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, which has more than seven million listeners. Harvey continues his unending pursuit and commitment to furthering opportunities in high schools throughout the country with generous contributions from the Steve Harvey Foundation.

Customer Reviews

He knows his stuff. Don’t overlook this one.
Seriously, I know he’s a comic and everything, but he’s got some good advice in this book. And it’s not hard to read, either. He has a lot humor that makes this book so enjoyable to read. I liked it so much, I hope he has a followup. I’d recommend it, definetly, along with Lucky In Love, Lucky In Life: How To Be Wanted-Use the Law of Attraction to Date the Man You Most Desire and Live the Life You Deserve.

Mostly, I found his candor helpful
Women are “leaving the door open for a guy to get away with something…Here’s what’s happened over the years,” says comic and radio host Steve Harvey. “Women’s standards and requirements have lowered over the years. And as men, we know that. We have taken advantage of it. We’ve created terms that we feed to women that allow us to exist as we do,” he told Belinda Luscome when discussing his New York Times best seller, co-authored with Denene Millner, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. For example, Harvey said (and I’m abbreviating) …

1. We created the term “nagging.” There’s really no such thing as nagging. As soon as a woman starts registering her complaint, we call it nagging. We let you know it will drive us away.

2. When you first meet a man, so you don’t ask a lot of personal questions, and questions about his business, we created the term gold-digger. Now why would a woman not be concerned about her financial future?

3. Three things men want from women: support, loyalty and “the cookie” (sex): “We’ll take a lot of things from a woman. But we have to have these three things. You take away any one of them, you lose a man’s affection.”

4. Three ways men show love to women: profess, provide and protect: “We have to define love in some kind of way. The problem with women is they have this great spectrum of what love is, and they want it reciprocated the same way they give it out. But we men can only nurture to a certain degree. It’s not in our DNA … We want to profess our love. We tell everyone,” he told an Atlanta audience.

5. “Men are driven by who they are, what they do, and how much they make. … These three things make up the basic DNA of manhood-the three accomplishments every man must achieve before he feels like he’s truly fulfilled his destiny as a man…, and until he’s achieved his goal in those three areas, the man you’re dating, committed to, or married to will be too busy to focus on you” Harvey wrote in the book.

“I’ve had two divorces myself. I understand. What I was never able to convey until I got a little older was why I was missing in action… trying so hard to be somebody … not as emotionally involved,” says Harvey who adds that he “could have written it (his book) in “about 35 pages…. because we’re guys. We are that simple,” he added in the interview.

Sometimes Harvey he sounds like he’s offering 1950s Mad Men-era advice, yet not as much as Whitey Casey in The Man Plan. It gets men nodding and some women giving heated responses to him on call-in talk shows:

* Take your husbands last name. It supports men’s desire to protect women.

* Men still expect women to keep a clean home.

* It is ok if women don’t know how to cook as long as they “cook” in the bedroom.

Three things to ask a man “to decide if he is worth keeping”, suggests Harvey, are (and these are just as valuable in reverse for men to ask women) are his:

1. Short-term goals and whether they match his long-term goals.

2. Views on family and kids.

3. Relationship with his mom

I would add:

4. Relationship to his friends

5. Views on money, especially on spending and saving.

6. Strongest values: what most matters to him in character traits and behavior.

 Fly in the Barbershop
Women can sit around with our girlfriends talking about how much men don’t make sense or how they won’t act right, but we oftentimes find better advice by actually asking for advice from our guy friends. The only problem is our guy friends may lie to spare our feelings, but Steve Harvey is not trying to be our friends and he’s telling it like it t.i.s. in his new book, “Act Like a Lady: Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment.”

Harvey breaks down all of the things that women need to know about men in 15 chapters on relationships–mama’s boys, marriage, whether we are the ones for men to sports fish (reel in and throw back into the water when they’re done) or a keeper; when we should introduce men to our child(ren); why the 90-day rule for sex makes sense; how independent women can remember to be ladies; the three things that drive men (who they are, what they do, and how much they make); and why “We need to talk” is a phrase that is man’s worst enemy.

There are some contradictions within the read, like why women need to get out of the 1945 mentality of waiting on men to marry them, but at the same time, sticking to the chivalrous expectations of letting him open doors, wearing heels, carrying heavy items and letting him fix things and paint. (However, I interviewed him for the “Chicago Defender” [article will be out in February sometime] and he explained why he felt some old-fashioned values should still be met. His analysis made sense too.)

But for every contradiction, there are lessons that make so much sense. Harvey has a point. Women are far more complex with their emotions than men are, judging from his research and his own opinions and observance from my own friends. Poet Maya Angelou said it best when saying “When someone shows you who they are, believe them.” That was the main theme throughout Harvey’s read–to set standards and stick to them. While some men may feel like Harvey is snitching, women like me finished the read feeling educated and confident in my past decisions. Excellent and quick read, but grab your highlighters and take notes.

This entertaining and informative book–written by Marianne Szymanski, child development and toy expert, and Ellen Neuborne, an award-winning business journalist–is an essential and authoritative guide to toys and play. Based on thirteen years of independent consumer-focused research, Toy Tips offers invaluable advice and practical information about selecting appropriate toys and answers questions such as Why do kids play with toys? What is the true role of toys? Which toys are good and which aren’t? How do toys figure into normal, healthy child development?

“Invaluable and specific guidance about how the right toys can help your kids learn, develop, build skills, and have some fun.” –Michele Borba, consultant, educator, and author, Parents Do Make a Difference, Building Moral Intelligence, and No More Misbehavin’

“No one is better equipped than Marianne Szymanski to help you make smart choices when purchasing toys for your kids or for the kids in your life.”–Spencer Christian, former host of Szymanski’s guest segments on ABC’s Good Morning America, and author, Is There a Dinosaur in Your Backyard? and many other children’s books

“Szymanski’s years of experience and passion for serving children make her a leading voice in the developmental benefits of toys and play.”–From the Foreward by Marvin W. Berkowitz

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Many parents don’t take a close look at their children’s toys until they hear about a recall of a particular item on the news. Szymanski, founder and president of the research group Toy Tips, presents an unbiased guide to help parents sort out the morass of toys on the market before they even purchase them. She advises readers to approach magazine articles and news stories with a judicious eye, and suggests they become experts themselves (by reading her book, naturally), because many award stickers on toys are “nothing more than thinly disguised public relations campaigns designed to herd parents toward particular products.” Szymanski (along with coauthor Neuborne, a business journalist) covers the various types of toys available (activity toys, board games, puzzles, etc.) and evaluates their suitability for infants through preteens. The breadth of information she offers is overwhelming, but conscientious parents won’t find a more comprehensive and impartial approach to intelligently purchasing toys for their children.
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
Customer Reviews

Enter the Toy Aisle with Confidence
No need to be overwhelmed or intimidated by the huge selection of plastic and plush crowding the shelves in the toy sections of your favorite stores. After reading Toy Tips (an easy, delightful and entertaining read) you’ll be able to sort through the stacks of children’s products and make smart choices about what to buy for the kids in your life.

Unlike many toy-focused books, Toy Tips does a great job in reminding readers that toys can be both educational and fun. It seems obvious, but sometimes we get caught up in the educational aspects of a toy and forget that a child can learn through play even if letters and numbers aren’t prominent on a product. Toy Tips does a marvelous job of dissecting the advantages of particular types of toys and pointing out the less-obvious skill sets that are achieved through their use. A toy that engages a child’s imagination encourages creativity, and exercising creativity is important. So a role play or plush toy can in fact be educational. Toy Tips charts out which kinds of products are safest and best suited for kids of different ages and developmental stages.

Toy Tips uses a very calculated product rating system that doesn’t dictate what I put in my shopping cart but instead arms me with the knowledge I need to make my own informed choices. Plus, it’s full of fun tales from the Toy Tips lab that, even if you don’t have any shopping ahead, are enjoyable to read.

BEST CHOICE FOR PLAY RESEARCH
As the mom of Lili and Eva, I am most interested in developmental research on toys and the value of play. I bought this book as a “bundle” with another similar title and I have to say that I could hardly put it down.
My favorite chapter is about Smart Shopping and it made shopping on the internet for toys much more understandable. I would suggest this book for any parent who wants to learn about the values that toys play in a child’s life. Also, the font of the book is easy to read and the toy quiz is fun to take.

A Good Guide
This is a valuable guide for anyone trying to wade through the confusion of the toy market. The format is very user friendly and the mini worksheets help to take the guesswork out of your toy purchases. The information is practical without being overwhelming.

Some bonds can never be broken…

Addie Downs and Valerie Adler will be best friends forever. That’s what Addie believes after Valerie moves across the street when they’re both nine years old. But in the wake of betrayal during their teenage years, Val is swept into the popular crowd, while mousy, sullen Addie becomes her school’s scapegoat.

Flash-forward fifteen years. Valerie Adler has found a measure of fame and fortune working as the weathergirl at the local TV station. Addie Downs lives alone in her parents’ house in their small hometown of Pleasant Ridge, Illinois, caring for a troubled brother and trying to meet Prince Charming on the Internet. She’s just returned from Bad Date #6 when she opens her door to find her long-gone best friend standing there, a terrified look on her face and blood on the sleeve of her coat. “Something horrible has happened,” Val tells Addie, “and you’re the only one who can help.”

Best Friends Forever is a grand, hilarious, edge-of-your-seat adventure; a story about betrayal and loyalty, family history and small-town secrets. It’s about living through tragedy, finding love where you least expect it, and the ties that keep best friends together.

“Warmly and realistically drawn… Weiner, creator of widely popular female characters, injects an element of suspense into her latest, Best Friends Forever. This book begins on an unexpected note of violence, but the friendship of the title is at its heart. Two estranged onetime high-school chums — one now a television weathergirl and the other one of Ms. Weiner’s lovable, snack-obsessed frumps — are thrown together to find out what happened in that opening scene and to hash out old grievances.
“Jennifer Weiner is a master of the modern-day fairytale.
Customer Reviews

Funny and poignant
I finished the novel last night and really enjoyed it. Jen Weiner has such a lot of range. She can go from poignant to laugh-out-loud in just a few sentences. The novel is about a friendship that goes sour and then is resurrected and often has a madcap, Thelma and Louise-feel, especially when the two friends are “on the lam.” Weiner fleshes out minor characters –her self-assured brother who meets with tragedy is particularly memorable–and keeps the pacing brisk, serving up a bit of a twist at the end.
My favorite part of the novel was the flashbacks to the girls’ childhoods. Jen brilliantly captures what it feels like to be ten and to have a very best friend with whom you share everything.

I think this just made tops as my favorite summer read…it has it all!
When Addie and Valerie became neighbors as children, Addie was certain they would remain BFFs forever. However a negative high school incident left Addie (the overweight and loyal friend) hurt–and tore the two into two directions where they remained until, 15 years later, Valerie (high school cheerleader, now weather girl) entered Addie’s life again…and with blood on her sleeve and in need of help.

Best Friends Forever is a story of suspense, friendship, adventure and secrets and is told via 1st person and 3rd person from two different characters and also weaves tales of the past into the present via flashbacks. Where these elements could be awkward if not done well, it actually not only flows perfectly, but adds great interest for the reader.

In spite of having read several great books recently I hadn’t realized that the range of emotion (humor, suspense, love, tears, revenge…) within “Best Friends Forever” was just what I needed til I read it.

The character development is so deep that I felt certain the author must “know” pieces of these characters somehow in real life or experienced some of what she described within her own–Great depths to their personalities and interactions. You truly read into their souls and she captures details in her words that make for deep insight.

I also felt I was taken from childhood to adulthood in great detail (some will feel as though they are right back in highschool with her descriptions. ) and I both cried and laughed…it’s actually a very deep story and nothing felt forced or contrived to me.

You’ll want to go through the adventure of Addie and Val so much that you may need to grab your booklight for this one…I found it to be a true “page turner”.

I felt empathy for Addie’s struggles and adored Jordan and was captured by a roller coaster of emotions for Valerie.

And…I’m typically not a person you can surprise with a twist at the end of a book; I always see it coming it seems. But this one was a surprise.

To wrap up a tale and include such a range of emotion…suspense, heartbreak, humor, romance, and surprise all intertwined made for a truly great summer read.

Afterall, what more is left?!

Conclusion: excellent read…includes great characters, descriptions, adventure and a range of emotions spliced with some humor. A+

I miss the charm of the first book
I have been a fan of Jennifer Weiner since her first book. However, in the last few years, I have felt as though she has walked away from her “chick lit” writing and has created more contemporary fiction for women and although I have seen Best Friends Forever referred to as chick lit, I would have to disagree.

Best Friends Forever is the newest book by Weiner and features Addie and Valerie who were best friends in primary school and ended up at opposite ends of the popularity chain in high school, which pretty much separated them until they meet up again as adults. Although they haven’t kept in touch at all, Valerie will show up on the other’s doorstep, in full bloom trouble – asking for help in this whoddunnit type of mini-mystery, intertwined with the two women trying to find themselves and each other throughout the storyline. There is a message here – which basically is that you never know what will happen in your life and looks and appearance can be deceiving and that, in your life, friendship and support are extremely important and worth fighting for.

While there are some cute episodes and some actually touching moments, I did not find this book all that interesting. The premise is kind of usual and I feel as though I have read this story, in different installments, throughout the years. The main characters are okay and the writing is fine, but I just did not find myself getting all involved and committed to this book and I certainly would not qualify this one as chick litty at all.

A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare’s passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger’s cinematic storytelling that makes the novel’s unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.

An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler’s Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
This clever and inventive tale works on three levels: as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with “Chrono Displacement” disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up to him exclaiming that she’d known him all her life. He, however, had never seen her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly finds himself time travelling to Clare’s childhood and meeting her as a 6-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare’s points of view, and so does the narration. Reed ably expresses the longing of the one always left behind, the frustrations of their unusual lifestyle, and above all, her overriding love for Henry. Likewise, Burns evokes the fear of a man who never knows where or when he’ll turn up, and his gratitude at having Clare, whose love is his anchor. The expressive, evocative performances of both actors convey the protagonists’ intense relationship, their personal quirks and their reminiscences, making this a fascinating audio.
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
From Booklist
On the surface, Henry and Clare Detamble are a normal couple living in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Henry works at the Newberry Library and Clare creates abstract paper art, but the cruel reality is that Henry is a prisoner of time. It sweeps him back and forth at its leisure, from the present to the past, with no regard for where he is or what he is doing. It drops him naked and vulnerable into another decade, wearing an age-appropriate face. In fact, it’s not unusual for Henry to run into the other Henry and help him out of a jam. Sound unusual? Imagine Clare Detamble’s astonishment at seeing Henry dropped stark naked into her parents’ meadow when she was only six. Though, of course, until she came of age, Henry was always the perfect gentleman and gave young Clare nothing but his friendship as he dropped in and out of her life. It’s no wonder that the film rights to this hip and urban love story have been acquired. Elsa Gaztambide
Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Customer Reviews

Powerful, well-written, original
“The Time Traveler’s Wife” is one of the most interesting, powerful books I’ve read in a long time. Audrey Niffenegger did a beautiful job taking some of the most complex ideas – time travel, marriage, love, children, friends, literary and artistic allusions, religion, death, drugs, childhood, growing, loss, and what it means to be human – and weaving them together poetically and with amazing clarity. Her characters are wonderful, “real” people with strengths and flaws, and I really grew to adore them. Despite skipping around time at the same rate as Henry, the time traveler, the events are sequenced in such a way that you still witness each character’s growth as a person, as well as discover many surprises along the way. Clare and Henry’s story is one of the best love stories I’ve read in a very long time. This book also echoes important modern-day questions about the appropriateness of gene therapy, and what it means to be a human being. I highly and enthusiastically recommend this book.

Clever and Compelling
I admit: I am an easy touch when it comes to time-travel books. I have loved such diverse books with this theme as “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”, “A Wrinkle in Time,” and “Time and Again.”

I was not disappointed by “The Time Traveler’s Wife.” The book both moved me and challenged me to think about a number of deeper issues in life (most notably, the true meaning of love in a romantic relationship).

The underlying story concerns Henry, a librarian at the Newberry Library in Chicago, and Clare, his artist wife. Henry suffers from CDP (Chrono-Displacement Order) which whisks him from the present to another point of time (usually the past). One minute he may be in the stacks of the Newberry Library in 2003, the next minute he may find himself in a field (probably naked) in Michigan with his future wife as a child sometime in the early 1980′s.

The author does an excellent job of sequencing the book. Even though Henry is shuttling back and forth in every chapter, she manages to move the plot forward. You do feel that you see Henry and Clare meeting, falling in love, starting a marriage and going through the stages of their lives. You do get to know their family and friends and see life happen to them.

However, I do feel that the author could have better developed all of her characters, particularly the supporting ones. I wanted to learn more about their close friends, Gomez and Charisse, and their troubled marriage. I felt that the landlady from Henry’s child-whom he constantly visited in his time-traveling modes-was a sketch figure that could have been better developed. I wished that the author could have mined deeper into the inner feelings of Henry and Clare.

Still I would highly recommend this book to most readers. (If time-travel books bother you, this won’t change your opinion.) It is a good, hard-to-put down read. And at the end, you’re exhausted by all the travel!

Beautifully written!
I stumbled across this book by mistake and hesitated to read it simply because it was 518 pages. To my surprise, I devoured this book in a few days and felt a pang of sadness when it was finished. The author crafts a story of something that is quite unbelievable and yet deftly makes it so very believable. I was hooked after the first chapter. Niffenegger managed to suck me in to this story so that I felt emotionally bound to the characters and their plight. It’s a tragic story that weaves so much love/pain/joy/disappointment that it fairly bursts with emotion. Read it!
