Sony PRS Series or Amazon Kindle Ereader?

Posted on July 3rd, 2009

The eReaders are here to stay. The leading manufacturers producing even more advanced models and the popularity of the concept is on the rise.

Amazon’s Kindle 2 is currently dominating the eReaders market, and the Sony PRS series ereaders are very close behind. Many users have emailed me about which model they should get.

While good things are being reported about Kindles and the Sony’s, you should be aware of the differences that could influence your buying decision.

The Amazon Kindle is the top choice for many. The abundance of Books, newspapers and magazines, combined with its wireless capabilities, makes the kindle a no-brainer for people who like user friendly devices.

On the other hand, the Kindle lacks native PDF support. That fact should make many business and academic users think twice before making the plunge.

Academic work, books, researches and reports are almost exclusively available in the PDF format. And unfortunately, Kindles conversion often makes these files unreadable because of alignment difficulties and other glitches.

The Sony ereaders, although less user friendly, offer native PDF support and this is the choice for the aforementioned audience. Users have reported a slightly steeper learning curve when first starting to use the Sony’s, and the requirement to have a computer with an on-line connection at hand makes the experience different than with the Kindle.

But, wouldn’t students and business professionals have a computer connected to the internet anyways?

So, to sum things up:

If you happen to be a newspaper person and read lots of magazines, you would love the Kindle with its way of delivering fresh papers every morning. You will also most certainly like the easy purchase experience that the Kindle offers.

However, if you know that you will consume mainly PDF files, the Sony eReaders is the choice for you. The native PDF functionality is worth it.
